Preparing a Bike for Storage
Do this properly once and the bike starts first go when you come back.
Fuel. Add a stabiliser and run the engine a few minutes so treated fuel reaches the whole system. A near-full tank leaves less room for condensation.
Battery. Put it on a battery tender, or pull it out and keep it somewhere you can maintain it. A flat, sulphated battery is the most common and most avoidable storage cost there is.
Tyres. Inflate to the recommended pressure or slightly above. For long stints, get the weight off with paddock stands so you avoid flat spots.
Chain and bare metal. Clean and lube the chain before it goes in. A light protective film on exposed metal is cheap insurance in this climate.
Cover. Breathable cover only, never plastic sheeting. And never cover a wet bike. Dry it completely first, or you have sealed moisture against the paint and metal for months.
Brisbane Humidity Is the Quiet Killer
Down here the enemy is not cold, it is moisture. Humidity gets into fork stanchions, brake discs, fasteners, headers and electrical connectors, and it works slowly enough that you do not notice until you pull the cover off.

Security: Layer It

Talk to your insurer before the bike goes in. Policies often carry conditions about where a bike is kept and what counts as a change of garaging address, and you do not want to find that out after a claim. Give them the storage address and get the answer in writing.
