Who is going to manage this while you are gone

This is where overseas storage goes wrong, and it is almost always admin, not the storage itself.

Sort these four things before you fly:

Name an alternate contact. You can list an alternate contact on your storage agreement before you fly. If your sister needs to grab your birth certificate or your mate needs to pull a box of tools out, that is a much shorter job if it is sorted in advance than an international phone call from scratch.

Use a card that will not expire mid-posting. A card that dies in month fourteen of an eighteen month contract, while you are in another time zone, is the most common reason storage payments fail. Use one with a long runway, or one your alternate contact can update.

Keep your contact details current. Give us an email you will actually read overseas, plus a local Australian contact. Do not rely on a mobile number you are about to disconnect.

• Run down and defrost the fridge. Empty it, defrost it fully, dry it out, and store it with the door propped slightly open.
• Wash and fully dry every fabric. Clothes, linen, curtains, lounge covers, mattresses. Fully dry, not "mostly dry". This is the biggest cause of ruined goods over a long absence.
• Pack electronics with desiccant. Original boxes if you have them, silica gel packs if you do not.
• No food. None. Not sealed, not tinned, not pet food. Food invites pests.
• Keep documents and valuables with you. Passports, birth certificates, titles, jewellery, hard drives. Take them or put them in a bank, not in a container you cannot reach from Dubai.

Insurance while you are out of the country

Speak to your insurer before you leave, and be specific with them about two things: that the goods will be in commercial storage, and that you will be out of the country.

Contents cover is generally written around the home you live in, and many policies treat unoccupied properties and stored goods differently to normal household contents. Some insurers offer stored goods cover, some exclude it, some require it declared. Ask them directly, get the answer in writing, and set a reminder to renew while you are away.

Month-to-month, because postings change

Contracts get extended. Contracts get cut short. Projects fall over. Someone gets sick at home and you are on a plane back next week.
